Family Cycling Holidays in France

By: Martyn Davis
Yet if mountain biking and going on strenuous cycling routes through the mountains is not you, then do not worry, there are plenty of other areas in France that will cater for the novice or the family cycling holiday, just like Brittany, this area is ideal for a family cycling holiday, as the coastal routes along the bays are reasonably flat, making the trip easier, whereas the Loire is more undulating, yet fabulous chateaux and riverside towns will enthral you and the family on your travels.

What about the Poitou-Charentes area, which is an excellent choice for those who love wildlife and bird watching, as the area is still extremely rural, even compared to some of the other areas in France and Burgundy is a great place to cycle along the many canal paths.

Then there is the Dordogne which is extremely picturesque, and from the rivers and gorges through to forests and vineyards, this area provides such a diversity you will enjoy the whole experience from the start to finish of your holiday.

Mind you, with a cycling holiday organised for you, there is no need to worry about where you will stop for a break or lunch or where you will be staying, which means you do not have to have your panniers full to the brim, as all your belongings are transported on for you, ready and waiting for when you arrive at your next stop, plus if you decide to add in other activities, such as canoeing and horse riding as well, then your bikes will be transported to your next stop and you will be picked up at a specified location.

So whether you are a cycling enthusiast or a novice with a family, France is a fantastic destination to explore on your bike.

Family Cycling Holidays in France

By: Martyn Davis

Cyclists of all abilities can look forward to some fantastic scenery whilst on a cycling holiday in france, along with experiencing traditional French cuisine in the many hotels you stop at on your travels through the scenic countryside.

France is a country that is extremely enthusiastic about cycling, as we are all no doubt well aware with the Tour de France, and they have made it ever so easy to explore the countryside and cities on two wheels, with dedicated cycle paths and routes all around.

Cycling holidays will give you peace and tranquility with awesome views of countryside, chateaux, medieval towns, hilltops, valleys and gorges and these are just some of things that you would easily miss out on if you were driving through France, and with the rich heritage, extraordinary landscapes and the gastronomic delights can all be appreciated more whilst cycling, especially because of the extensive national network of veloroutes.

These veloroutes will take you along canal towpaths, quiet country lanes and converted railway lines as well as getting you into the heart of the countryside by using voies vertes, also known as green ways, which are specially designated tracks that are completely shut to motorised traffic, you can even hire your cycle en route from one of many locations-velos that line the major cycling routes.

You can still find areas in France that are so peaceful, it is rare to see a car, yet you may be passed by a few very passionate cyclists! Stopping for lunch and experiencing the local cuisine and of course the local wine is must and you can often find fortified villages scattered along the hill-tops and valleys for the most pleasant of stops.

Or if you prefer to have your trip organised then why not let the hoteliers transport your luggage by finding establishments that offer an "accueil velo" which are hotels and bed and breakfasts that cater specifically for cycling holidays throughout France.

With a French Alps cycling holiday you cannot go wrong, as you will be able to discover some of the Worlds most spectacular cycling routes, with climbs like the world famous Col de la Croix der Fer and Alpe d'Huez around Grenoble. But as well as the Alps, cycling in the Pyrenees with its mountain climbs such as the Col de Portet d'Aspet and the Col d'Aspin will provide you with the opportunity to see some of Europe's most beautiful locations. Although these are not for the feint hearted! If you have ever watched the Tour de France, you will have seen some of those mean mountainous routes and the suffering these cyclists go through, yet perhaps this could be just the type of holiday you are looking for!

Also, the Midi-Pyrenees offers a wealth of art and history from prehistoric cave paintings to Renaissance mansions and is also famous throughout France for its cuisine which is rich with foies gras, Roquefort cheese, Gaillac wines, and Armagnac brandy, but to make the most of this region, it is often advisable to plan your cycling holiday very carefully, so that you can enjoy the many different places en route.

Cycling on the Blue Ridge Parkway

By: Scott James

The Blue Ridge Parkway is the legacy from the era of Roosevelt and the New Deal. Now for students of history and indeed for some with a very long memory, it is not difficult to understand why this project was put together.

Originally planned as a link between the great Smoky Mountain national Park and the Shenandoah national Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway has now taken on an identity all of it’s own.

The 469 miles off the Blue Ridge Parkway are a testament to the care and attention and craftsmanship of the original workers and this goes quite some way to adding to the experience and enjoyment gained by travelling on this route way.

As you can imagine executing a feat like this took considerable experience as well as imagination. The landscape architect Stanley Abbot was chosen to head up this task and as befits a man who’s CV includes Central Park Manhattan he achieved this with considerable aplomb.

The Blue Ridge Parkway took approximately 2 years to complete and extends from Waynesboro in the north to just outside of Cherokee on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the South.

As it travels south west from Waynesboro the Blue Ridge Parkway passes Roanoke in Virginia and Asheville in North Carolina before stopping just short off the Tennessee North Carolina border just south of Gatlinburg.

The Parkway is a great route for those who lovers of bicycles. The real reason for this is that the quality of the road itself is excellent in that actually the bicycle is a great way to experience the outstanding scenery at a more leisurely pace than one would otherwise experience from a car. However to enjoy the benefits of the Blue Ridge Parkway on a bicycle takes planning and to be brutally blunt endurance. This last aspect is key as though the lowest point may well only be 600 foot above sea level and the highest point 6000 foot the various “ups and downs” off the route actually total an elevation change of nearly 48000 feet. That's nearly 9 miles to the uninitiated!

As has been mentioned the road effectively spans two states Virginia and North Carolina the terrain in each state is actually quite different effectively Virginia is more in the foothills of the Appalachians but when you hit the North Carolina section of the Blue Ridge Parkway mountings scenery becomes much more alpine and dramatic.

Initially work started on the Blue Ridge Parkway in 1935 and actually took 52 years before the roadway was actually officially opened in 1987 as one continuous road.

To really give the Blue Ridge Parkway it’s due then you really have to set aside two weeks to enjoy your visit and even then you may well find that that is not enough.

10 Tips To Enhance Your Cycling Experience

By: Jason Storm

Cycling is very good for your health. It's a great way to lose weight and to firm up your legs. Cycling also helps to keep your heart and cardiovascular system healthy.

Here are ten tips that that can make your cycling experience more enjoyable:

*Finding a bike that is a good size for you is important if you are going to enjoy your ride. Make sure that your posture feels good while riding. *The type of bike you should get depends on what type of riding you will be doing. Are you riding in the city, travelling long distances or will you be

going off-road? For long distances you want a light bike with thin wheels, for off-road you want a thicker frame and wider tires.

*Another thing to look at if you are planning to go long distance is your bicycle seat. A long distance bike should be more comfortable and it's a good idea to invest in a well padded seat.

*Make sure that you bring plenty of water with you for your ride. A good idea is to have a water bottle attached to the bike so you can easily have a drink at any time.

*If you're going on a long ride it's important to eat proper food a few hours before. Pasta, rice and bread are foods with a high amount of slow carbohydrates which help to stabilize your body's energy level.

*It can be helpful to bring some fast carbohydrates with you on the ride, such as granola bars, bananas, energy drinks, etc.

*Always bring a phone with you when you are going out. It's helpful if something unexpected happens, for example if you drive on something sharp and get a flat tire. I recommend keeping it off and only using it when you need to, don't get distracted by talking while you're riding.

*Prevent your bicycle from getting stolen by investing in a quality lock. Also, it's a good idea to park your bike at designated parking areas since a lone bike usually attracts thefts easier.

*The clothes you wear also has a great impact on your experience. To choose comfortable yet fitting clothes makes a big difference. In this way you can move with ease and still have as little resistance from the wind as possible.

*You're better to start off slowly and go for short rides in the beginning, than to go for long rides straight away and end up with a sore bottom and aching muscles.

Cycling really is a wonderful way to get out into the fresh air and it's a great way to see the landscape where you live. Most of us could use a little more exercise and cardiovascular training, it can be as easy as getting on the bike and pedalling.

How Carbohydrate Cycling Can Break That Fat Loss Plateau

By: Angie Schumacher

You've been working out hard, eating clean, but you still are not making any progress. Carbohydrate cycling is the most effective low carbohydrate diet and will help you bust through that plateau!
Carbohydrate cycling is the practice of lowering carbs for 2-3 days and then bringing your carbs back up for 1-2 days, instead of just keeping your carb ratios the same all the time. This helps your body to burn fat at a higher rate on the lower carb days and then replenish your carbs on higher days. This keeps your metabolism from slowing down and makes sticking to your 'diet' easier knowing that you will be able to eat higher carbs and calories in a few days.
There are no strict rules when using the carb cycling diet. Everyone is different and you will need to play with the days you stick with lower carb days and higher carb days. Finding the right ratios are also something you will need to experiment with. Some people can eat more starchy carbs and still lose fat, but others, like me, will need to restrict their starchy carbs and focus more on using fibrous carbs to meet their carbohydrate needs.
You can also plan your carbohydrate cycling around special events or plans that you may have. That is what makes this diet so easy and personalized.
I have recently been doing a low carbohydrate diet for 5 days and then 2 higher carbohydrate days. I do find that during the 5 low days, I do have a tendency to have less energy. Carbohydrates are what provide our body with the energy, so I find that by focusing most of my carbs around my workouts, it helps provide me with enough energy to really put in a good workout.
On average, women should lean towards 125-175 grams of carbs on low days and 200-300 grams on higher days. Men, 175-225 grams on low days and 350-400 grams on high days. Like I mentioned before, every person is different and may need to play with these numbers a bit to find what works best for you.
Pay attention to how your body is feeling. If you are lacking in energy and feeling very week, increase your starchy and fibrous carbs, but focus your starchy carbs around your workouts. But, if you have plenty of energy, but aren't seeing any fat loss results, slowly decrease your starchy carbs.
Your body is a tool and you can use it to achieve many things. Don't be afraid to try different things, especially if you have hit a plateau. Changing things up, whether it be nutrition or your workouts, are always a good way to stir up your metabolism and help you to start making progress again.

Mountain Biking

By: Dev Sri

Mountain Biking is a sport of endurance, skills and self-reliance. From a back yard to a gravel road, from country sides to mountain slopes, fire roads to the thrills of biking down narrow tracks through forests, mountains, deserts – mountain biking offers incomparable thrills and fun.

There are aspects of mountain biking that are more similar to trail running than regular bicycling. Because riders are often far from civilization, there is a strong ethic of self-reliance in the sport. Riders learn to repair their broken bikes or flat tires to avoid being stranded miles from help. This reliance on survival skills accounts for the group dynamics of the sport. Club rides and other forms of group rides are common, especially on longer treks.

Mountain Biking entails the sport of riding bicycles off-road, often over rough terrain, whether riding specially equipped mountain bikes or hybrid road bikes. Most mountain bikes share similar characteristics that underscore durability and performance in rough terrain: wide, knobby tires, large, round frame tubing, front fork or dual suspension .The durability factor means a far heavier bicycle weight to rider ratio than their road touring cousins.

Folding Mountain Bikes – Your Travel Mates, Your Convenience!

By: Robert Sheehan
Folding mountain bikes are essentially practical bicycles, which are easy to store and transport. These mountain bikes can be folded in seconds and you will not even need any special rack for these bikes. Just put it inside your suitcase and carry it like another piece of luggage inside a car, boat, train or even inside an airplane.

The folding technique of mountain bikes is a patented military design and it was initially used to develop full-sized folding bikes for the US Marines and paratroopers for strategic use.

A folding mountain bike is a bit expensive when compared to a non-folding mountain bike. Despite the price-factor, purchasing a foldable bike will be advantageous in every respect. Actually, the manufacturers of folding mountain bicycles have not compromised with the sturdiness or toughness of the bikes in making them foldable (and hence portable).

As regards choices, these days you simply have plenty of choices with manufacturers like Airnimal, Montague launching a great many models that allow easy, convenient loading and unloading. Select from among the many lightweight yet tough bikes, choosing as per your requirement.

Following beneath are descriptions of some top foldable mountain bikes available in the market:

Hummer

Montague-made Hummer is a high-tech folding mountain bike. The Hummer bicycle, designed after full-sized military bikes, has normal wheels with knobby tires and hence it can be used on any terrain. It takes around 30 seconds to fold a Hummer and the folded bicycle measures just 36" x 28" x 12". The folding is accomplished without the use of tools.

The Hummer is essentially lightweight yet it is perfectly tough and durable. Other plus-points of this bicycle are – Shimano precision index shifters for a quick gear change, 24-speed Shimano drive train and a front suspension with a front disk brake.

Paratrooper Mountain Bike

The market-leaders have launched yet another folding mountain bike, the Paratrooper Mountain Bike. A very tough bike, the Paratrooper folds and unfolds in less than 30 seconds. This superb braking power and excellent engineering behind this Montague bike makes it unparalleled for rugged terrains. Montague also markets important accessories like foldable pedals and carrying cases - both hard and soft cases.

Airnimal Rhino

Airnimal Rhino, Airnimal’s first officially launched ‘off-road’ bike is a folding mountain bike. Its 20” wheels and front and rear suspension make it perfect for all terrains.

Giatex Stretching Bike

The Giatex Stretching Bike is based on a new folding concept. In this case, it is not the frame that folds from the middle, rather the steering column and the rear part that are folded down. The folded bike measures about 37 inches.

Bike Fridays

Bike Fridays made by Green Gear Cycling Inc. are revolutionary finds because they are collapsible bikes rather than foldable. The assembling and disassembling takes time, but the new bikes are, performance wise, excellent.

Mountain Bikes

By: Augusto Clarke

Mountain bikes which are also called mountain bicycle (MTB, ATB that is All Terrain Bicycle) is designed in particular for mountain biking, on dirt trails and many other unpaved surfaces. When compared to road bicycles they are better and rugged enough for such unfriendly terrain.

These mountain bikes have broad, knobbier tires for more grip and absorption of shock. In modern bikes, suspension for front wheel has become the custom while suspension for the full front and rear is becoming more and more general.

In few mountain bikes, the handlebars are fixed with bar ends, but riser handlebars which are made such that they oppose to a flat straight handlebar are becoming increasingly popular because a very few riders use bars with their ends extended.

These bikes usually have 26 inches or 559 mm wheels, but after year 2002 many bikes are available in the markets, which have 29 inches or 622 mm wheels. This is the diameter universally used for other normal road bikes which is also known as a 700c. Note that the name that is given to the diameter of a rim in inches is altered from the rim's real size.

These wheel configurations make these mountain bikes perfect for mountain biking. It would be very unsafe to use the normal road bikes on such terrains. These bikes are more rugged and resilient and are designed by a team of internal experts in order to ensure safety. They are always tested to provide the latest cutting edge designed and quality which only increases as time passes

As a beginner it could be very confusing for one to just stroll into a bike shop to buy their very first mountain bike. And what is more confusing is what all accessories one would need to start biking.

Mountain bike accessories and other mountain bike products one would want are available in plenty. A shopkeeper will be looking for a profit and would sell everything he can, but what beginners and customers with a budget need is a bike that has the proper accessories to make the ride safe and pleasant.

The advantages of using mountain bikes are; They are very light in weight, they provide better climbing and acceleration, they are laterally stiff, they give us a submissive ride and absorb vibrations and most important of all they are drop-dead gorgeous. There are many varieties and types of mountain bikes which can be seen in the market. Some important or popular varieties of mountain bikes are:

Barracuda: they are designed exceptionally well and are very suitable. Haro : they provide more comfort and style Giant mountain bikes: these have giant wheels designed for various conditions Rocky mountain bikes K2 mountain bikes etc

They come in many colours like satin grey, vivid pink, black, blue with white spokes, grey, vivid purple, satin blue, hazy red, sky blue, yellow, orange, green etc.

With so much comfort, safety and range mountain bikes are the best thing to have for a ride. So why would you want to buy anything else!

Review - Giro Remedy Full Face Bike Helmet

The Giro Remedy Full Face Bike Helmet is hands down the best bang for your buck, when it comes to full-faced bike helmets. Whether you're into Downhill Mountain Biking, Dual Slalom, Dirt Jumping, or BMX riding you'll love all that this helmet has to offer. It's a tough, comfortable, good looking, inexpensive helmet and that's why we bought it, use it, and love it!

Design

This fiber glass shell helmet comes in nine fresh and sharp color schemes. The design offers 14 vents with internal air channeling to keep your head cool while bombing through those rock gardens. The Remedy features a 3 bolt visor, washable interior liner, and the popular EVA lined chin bar. The fiberglass Giro Remedy Helmet weighs 1050 grams, which is not bad for such an aggressive helmet. If you ride hard, you won't care about the weight of this helmet, you'll worry about protecting your head! If you're a "gram counter" or just conscious about weight, Giro offers a Carbon S Remedy version. As always, this helmet complies with U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's safety standards for bicycle helmets.

Real Life Riding Test

We put the Giro Remedy to the test.

Our first test was at the local dirt jumps. We hit the dirt jumps and sure enough it involved a nice head "smack" to the handle bars when landing the first set. The Giro Remedy Helmet worked! Helmet score of "1", injury "0". This is exactly why we bought this helmet! Confidence in your protective equipment will help you go big when jumping!

The second test was a brief urban assault through town. While attempting to pull a manual off of a loading dock, the bike came back too far leading to a nice "head smack" on the pavement. Giro Remedy Helmet score of "2", injury "0".

The third test was at the local BMX track. On our fourth pass through the park, we hit a table top with maximum speed, which resulted in a "bail out" of the bike and a nice "tuck and roll" on the track. Giro Remedy Bike Helmet score of "3", injury "0".

A great helmet like the Remedy instills confidence in your riding. This new found confidence may cause more crashes, but will improve your riding ability!

Price Point

We have seen this helmet sell for a prices between $130 and $180. A helmet of this quality in other manufacturer model lines could cost you more than $200. We believe that when it comes to your noggin, a good quality full faced helmet under $200 dollars is a steal.

Bottom Line

Head protection is to be taken very seriously. We ride hard and have the scars and bruises to prove it! A couple years ago, a member of our family came short of a "double" during a dual slalom race and landed on his face. A couple shots of morphine and an ambulance ride later he had his mouth wired shut and an oral surgeon's business card.

It's vital to purchase and wear the appropriate head gear and that's why we believe that the Giro Full Faced Remedy Bike Helmet will do the job at a spectacular price.

Evolution of Mountain biking

This article speaks about the primary usage of a bicycle and how mountain bikes evolved from 1970s to the current trend bicycles.

Bicycles are used by people for various reasons. Bicycle is a great medium of transport for people to get to and back from work. Shopping items can fit into the basket attached in the front of the bicycle. Also, they offer a fabulous way of traveling while you are on a holiday and aid you to explore various places.

Riding on road as well off road is always done by people however mountain biking has a history of that started thirty years ago in the year 1970’s. Current trend designs have made accessibility to this sport easier to people and mountain biking shows that this sport is now more famous than it was ever.

Though enjoyed by people all over the world, mountain biking started its life in California, America. A cycle fanatic group decided to check out few runs on the downhill on their bikes that might now look old fashioned to most of us. The tracks are almost the same as the mountain bike race tracks of today however; there has been a considerable change in the bikes over the prevailing years.

Such races had become well-known, and earlier similar long races happened along the tracks at various locations in different countries.

New materials and methods of building these bikes have come into reality that has made building a bike very easy that can withstand anything that a rough not on road terrain can give to the bike.

Frames that are light strong and good gears have allowed many people to give a try by making mountain biking easy. Mountain biking history shows that earlier mountain bike riders started adapting their bikes to make the best out of the downhill routes and runs and hence evolved the current day mountain biking.

Earlier, the only kind of bicycle that could be bought was supposed to be only ridden on the road. Though people rode this bicycle off road, it was not so famous enough to guarantee a bike specifically designed for this use.

However, California bikers have changed all this. Mountain biking history started with them and they started to think again about the way bicycles had to be made to make a design that would be able to withstand all the conditions and obstacles that these off road track give.

Whenever you get hold of your mountain bike and plan for a ride might be across the down or a muddy field or a slippery slope that is steep with konbbly tires, should remind you of the 1970’s pioneers. These included not only those for men but also bikes for women.

Basics of Mountain Biking

Mountain biking, as a sport, has been around since the 1970's. The sport originated when bikers refitted their traditional bikes with stronger brakes and thicker, more durable tires. Groups of riders from around the country would gather and race down mountains or hills on these refitted bikes. Hence, the beginning of mountain biking as we know it today.

Since the 1970's, the sport has grown tremendously and there are now different types of mountain biking for different terrains and purposes. However, the most popular type of mountain biking is still the traditional cross country style, where the rider will generally need to climb and descend a variety of hills on different terrains including paved and dirt terrains.

When mountain biking, there are different types of equipment needed. First and foremost is the right bike for your body type and riding needs. Going to a store that specializes in mountain bikes and gear is a good idea for anyone just starting out with the sport. In addition to the bike, there is also some essential equipment every rider should have. Since mountain biking takes place on more difficult terrain than traditional cycling, safety gear is especially important in order to reduce the chances of serious injury. The most important item you need is a helmet. A helmet should be the #1 item you get when getting ready to head out on the trail. A helmet will protect your head should you fall in difficult terrain, and since its much easier to fall where the terrain is rough, you absolutely need strong head protection. Don't skimp when it comes to your helmet.

Another important item to have is gloves. A good set of gloves will make the grip on your bike handles more sure and also protect your hands from cuts and scrapes should you take a fall.

A good pair of sunglasses is also essential. Your glasses should protect your eyes from rocks, dirt, mud or other debris and also make it easier to see in different types of weather and at different times of day. Consider a set of sunglasses with interchangeable lenses so that you can change the lenses depending upon the weather or time of day for maximum contrast and protection from eye fatigue and strain.

Bike tools should be taken along on the trail as well, since the heavy strain of off road and off path riding leads to more mechanical and equipment breakdowns. Essential tools to have with you include a tire pump, extra tire tubes or chains and a basic toolkit to allow you to repair your bike if needed.

Appropriate clothing is also essential for mountain biking. Your clothes should be lightweight and comfortable for the weather, but also strong and durable.

Don't forget the shoes, your shoes need to be comfortable but also practical for the terrain.

Armed with all the mountain biking essential equipment and knowledge you need, you'll be ready to take on whatever terrain you encounter.
